Task 7 part 3
psychedelic Rock- Another brick in the wall by Pink Floyd is a completely narrative video. It starts with an intro before the song starts and ends with an outro after the piece. It also breaks in the middle of the song to add more Narrative. According to Andrew Goodwin's theory this video would be an illustrated one as the story it tells has a beginning, middle and end.
Hip Hop- Headlights by Eminem is all about his relationship with his mum growing up, as this song is quite emotional the video breaks the codes and conventions of a stereotypical hip hop video. There's not a big group of people in any of the shots, no male gaze and no perfomance. Instead the video is shot from a first person perspective creating more personal shots so you can relate to the song on a deeper level.
Folk- You don't know how it feels is a song by Tom Petty a mainly folk singer. The music video produced with this song reflects the folk style with it being a performance based video. The camera focuses on Tom throughout the entire video meaning we can see his costume, a very plain and simple one suitable for the genre. There is also a lot going on in the background all involving the country side and farms/ranches. This creates a mise en scene that reflects the genre put forward.
Hard Rock- Like the previous video, Pretender by Foo Fighters, is very stereotypical to its genre. It is a performance based narrative where the band play in front of riot police. This gives us the connotation of rebellious behaviour, which is what a hard rock band would be like. Furthermore, at the break of the video the police run forward and are forced back by the sudden break in song. This further emphasis there side of rebelliousness. Also the costumes they wear are simple black and white and they have long hair and stubble, again fitting to the genre they represent.

Task 7 Part 2
This video the lead character romanticises himself by having the choir singing next to him and him repeating bible quotes, which has been added to the music video. He's also added in real footage of war and poverty etc. This gives the music video an emphasis on the song being about what the world has become. It also shows he's singing about the truth which you may of not known by just listening to the video. This part of the music video is also at the break of the song, because of this it is filled with quick cuts to make the video fast paced and show a lot that going on.
This video by Aerosmith heavily focuses on the male gaze. When the two girls pull into the gas station the old man looks at them...dirtily. The camera then focuses on the woman's rear as it slowly pans up her body. The girls then use there looks and seductive skills to take things from the shop without paying. The whole narrative of this music video is very degrading towards woman, though the sexual side shown on the males performing on stage would show its a sexual video in general and not biased towards one gender.
This video by Pink Floyd is completely different to other music video's. It is a full narrative but has no acting in it, its only animations that change in time with the key changes in the song. Pink Floyd are a very psychedelic band and this would be a main reason for why they made a video like this. It suits there branding, plus the song is dedicated to a former band member who dropped the band due to taking too much LCD, the music video reflects similar behaviour to some one who may be tripping, for example the figure flying high in the sky.
This video by Michael Jackson is heavily performance based, this would be because Michael Jackson is a very talented dancer who would like to show this off as part of his brand. The video also contains a lot of editing techniques. These types of techniques add a lot to the media thats produced, before the video we couldn't appreciatte this kind of presentation.

Task 6 Student Music Videos
A/A*
This is a music video from last year that is of very good quality. The lip syncing is completely on time, the location is interesting, the costumes have been well thought out and the video as a whole is very creative. Animated cuts are used throughout the video giving it more marks on the editing front and there also very creatively used making for scenes you would often see in a music video. The location and outfits are very fitting. The chase takes place through a big city which you would associate with crime. I'd give this video a A/A* as everything has been displayed in a professional way and the final piece is very professional.
This music video was made 2 years ago and like the previous video is of very good quality. Though the shots were similar mid shots throughout they were effectively used and cleverly placed. The whole video was black and white and though not a hard edit to make, an effective one none the less. The quick shots that are used when the drop breaks in wrk really well as they create an impact on the viewer as the music builds. The lip syncing didn't work so well as it was out of time at times however other than this the video is professional.
B/C
This music video was made last year and is at a B/C standard. There is no lip syncing, and little acting. Also the editing mainly consists of cuts and nothing else. Though one camera trick is used effectively throughout this video and thats the cutting of the woman in and out of the shot. This is used throughout the whole video and used as a key theme, as he is mourning over her death throughout. The camera shots mainly consisted of mid shots and I feel this could of been changed to create more of a variety. Though the camera work that was done was done in a professional manner.
This music video has good editing techniques however it uses the same locations and the acting is not amazing. When the lead character is stood in front of the garage an editing technique is used very well there handing over a lot of marks. However the rest of the music video is just the lead character miming, quite poorly, with boring shots of the came tracking down an alley. The creative side of this piece is good with the way the director has chosen to have people holding up sheets of paper with words on them instead of acting out a scene to portray this emotion.
D/E
This video has good camera angles, but thats about it. The creativity here lacks massively, the whole video consists of two actors walking around town. There's no lip syncing or acting between the characters and to be honest theres not a lot to say about this video either, its just an un creative video that I can imagine didn't get many marks

From doing this task I've learn't about how branding is used to create an image for the artist. I can use this information when creating my music video, as I will know how to make the video suit my artists brand.

Task 4 Digipak Analyses
This Digipak here has a very serious mood to it. The dark colours and painted artistic effect add a lot of emotion to it, branding it as a serious album. The outline of the man playing an acoustic guitar also tells the audience this is going to be a singer/songwriter type of album. Furthermore the location this painting takes place is a quaint meadow with a stand alone tree, a location that is commonly associated with a lot of feeling and emotion.
This Digipak has an interesting layout different to other typical digipaks. Instead of folding out vertically it folds out from all side revealing close up shots of all the band members. The mood for this digipak would be serious like the last one though it adds colour making it more interesting. Each band member has a serious expression and is looking away from the camera making for a more mysterious digipak than an eye catching one.
This digipak greatly contrasts the others. It has a strong pink theme throughout making it immediately connectable to the female audience. It could also attract the male audience though with the close up on the cover and the male gaze that is shown on the banner.
From doing this task I have learn't a lot about how Digipaks are made. Its given me a good understanding of them should I make my own, Ive looked at the colour schemes, miss en scene and editing. This gives me a good idea of what techniques to use to match whatever artists I may be making a Digipak for and how to match there style.

Task 1 History of Music Video
From doing this task Ive learnt a lot about how music videos started and how they've progressed to what they are today. This will help me out a lot when making my music video as I will be able to identify what has and hasn't worked well throughout the music video industry. Its also given me background knowledge I can use when adding to my research.
